Module Summary: Click on the module title at the left of this description to enter the module for an overview of the Smart Antennas Communications course. The module contains two activities:

  • View the Course Outline.
  • Test your knowledge with a Pre-Course Quiz.

If you would like to learn more about the topic, instructions are provided for you to enroll in the course.

This collaborative course area is common to the Sampler course as well as the Full course on Smart Antenna Communications.  Included in this area are: a discussion forum for Smart Antenna topics, and editable content in the form of wikis for glossary, categorized list of references, MIMO in standards and MIMO leaders.

This is a demo only for internal use.

Learn the technology and jargon around MIMO, a feature promising doubling and quadrupling of data rates in next generation wireless standards - WiMAX, LTE, UMB. MIMO is already commercially available in Wireless LAN equipment.

This self paced course establishes familiarity with basic principles and terminology associated with Smart Antennas. The emphasis is on MIMO technology, which is appearing in all wireless standards as the means for realizing higher data rates. The course is ideally intended for anyone wishing to get a quick overview of the topic. Knowledge of wireless communication basics is assumed.

Total Duration: 80 minutes of narrated content, viewed at your own pace in small modules from 5-20 minutes in length. Quizzes and supplemental material at your discretion.

3GPP's Release 8 specifications define the Long Term Evolution (LTE) radio interface standard. LTE is a significant step in 3GPP UTRAN evolution, targeting 100 Mbps on the downlink and 50 Mbps on the uplink. This short course provides a basic understanding of LTE and its network counterpart known as System Architecture Evolution SAE. Topics covered in the course include the background for LTE and the Evolved Packet System (EPS) comprising LTE and SAE. The major part of the course focuses on the physical layer and Layer 2 features of the radio interface. The course concludes with a comparison of basic LTE and WiMAX features and the challenges for LTE.

The main objective of this course is to provide a high-level overview of wireless architecture, particularly from a radio resource management perspective. The course covers the evolution of mobile wireless architecture from the first generation to the fourth generation of mobile wireless. Beginning with the circuit switched paradigm in 1G and 2G mobile wireless systems, you will be able to outline how both circuit switched voice and data traffic is supported in 2G and 3G systems. The course covers the 3.9G Evolved Packet System supporting packet switched data and the next steps in wireless architecture evolution.
